Fusing function and form: How to choose the best basin waste system

4th May 2023

When redesigning a bathroom space, the main focus is quite rightly on the big ticket high-impact features: the bath, basin, storage, and the bathroom interior design colour scheme. But this means the small details in a bathroom design can be overlooked, yet they are as integral to the success of the bathroom remodel as the main fixtures and fittings. Bathroom performance is a key indicator of a triumphant bathroom design.

Having invested time poring over The Luxury Bath Company’s freestanding baths and stone basins; having deliberated, measured and confirmed your choice, the next thing to fathom is which bathroom waste kit is needed. To ease your decision-making fatigue, this basin waste guide takes you through the details so you can make the right choice – to not only achieve a superior level of function but also contribute to the overall aesthetic.

What does a basin waste do?

The purpose of a sink waste is to control the flow of water in and out of the bathroom basin. When you are filling it, the waste shuts off the plug to allow the water to collect. When finished, releasing the plug allows the water to drain swiftly and safely away through the waste pipe. This simple process can be complicated by the options available.

What is the best type of basin waste?

The Luxury Bath Company is a big fan of click clack basin wastes – also known as sink push button or sprung wastes. Easy to install, operate, maintain and keep hygienic, they are a great basin waste solution for all the family to use, even in high traffic bathrooms.

Do I need a slotted or unslotted basin waste?

This is the most frequently asked question to The Luxury Bath Company’s customer service team. In the simplest terms, if your choice of natural stone basin has an overflow, a slotted sink waste is needed. Unslotted wastes are required for basins without an overflow.

Most of our natural stone basins require unslotted wastes and do not have overflows, the exceptions being:

·         The Bomberg stone countertop basin.

·         The Haydon ultra luxe contemporary pedestal basin.

·         The gorgeous Irvine wall hung cloakroom basin.

·         The statement Marlow stone freestanding basin.

To make it easy for you, our basin wastes are labelled slotted or unslotted in our luxury bathroom online store – the only complexity is which finish to choose?

·         Fresh and edgy matt black sink waste for a contemporary industrial vibe.

·         Brushed brass basin waste for sublime yet powerful glamour.

·         Chrome basin waste accessories for timeless elegance.

What size basin waste do I need?

It’s crucial you choose the right slotted or unslotted basin waste but it’s also important you buy waste specifically designed for basins. Basin wastes are 32mm or 1¼” BSP, whereas kitchen sink and bath wastes are larger at 40mm or 1½” BSP. Always double check you have put the correct waste in your trolly to avoid the frustration of returning your products.

The Luxury Bath Company offers a diverse selection of basin wastes, luxury bathroom taps and accessories to complement your bathroom design at affordable factory-direct prices.
